Here’s a tricky thing about watercolor.
Because watercolor paint is transparent, every layer you put down only makes an area darker. Which means the light areas in a finished painting are the bits of paper you didn’t paint over, or never touched at all.
And it only works in that one direction. Once an area has gone dark, you can’t put the light back!
...Have you ever set out to paint a nice smooth, even wash of watercolor — and then come back a few minutes later to find it had dried streaky or patchy?
Maybe you even spotted it starting to go wrong, so you went back in with your brush to smooth things out… and just made it worse.
