Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White say they plan to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft—but their announcements appear designed to challenge the league’s eligibility language rather than begin genuine professional comebacks.

The unusual declarations have pushed the national debate over transgender participation in women’s athletics from schools and colleges into professional basketball. They have also raised an important question for families: Could whatever happens in the WNBA affect middle school, high school or college athletes?

The short answer is not directly. Professional, college and school sports are governed by different organizations, laws and eligibility policies. However, the controversy could influence future political debates and place pressure on sports organizations to write clearer rules.

What Did Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White Announce?

Freedom announced that he was declaring himself a prospect for the 2027 WNBA Draft after reviewing what he described as the league’s eligibility and inclusion guidelines.

“If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA,” Freedom said in his announcement, according to People.

White followed with his own announcement, saying that he identified as a woman for the purpose of entering professional women’s basketball. He also threatened legal action if he were prevented from participating or went undrafted, according to reports.

Their comments indicate that the declarations are intended as a public test or protest of the WNBA’s current language—not confirmation that either man has been accepted as an eligible WNBA prospect.

Can They Simply Declare and Enter the WNBA?

No. Publicly announcing a draft declaration does not automatically make someone eligible, place that person’s name in the draft pool or require a WNBA team to select them.

The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” However, the publicly discussed language does not provide a detailed definition of “women” or establish a clearly published standard addressing transgender eligibility.

That lack of detail is the opening Freedom and White say they are challenging.

Even if the league recognized someone as draft-eligible, teams would remain free to select other players. Many eligible prospects go undrafted every year, so not being selected would not, by itself, establish discrimination.

Reports indicate that WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has told league officials that player-eligibility rules are collectively bargained and that team leaders and the players’ association will discuss the issue further. Any formal change would likely require negotiations between the league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association.

Could This Affect Middle School Sports in Katy and Texas?

Texas public school and open-enrollment charter school athletic competitions are governed by state law and rules implemented through the University Interscholastic League.

Texas House Bill 25 requires students participating in sex-designated interscholastic competitions to compete according to the sex correctly recorded on their birth certificate at or near the time of birth. Across the country, the answer may vary because states and athletic associations have different laws and policies. A professional league’s decision could become part of future legislative arguments, but it would not automatically bind a school district or state athletic association.

Could It Affect College Sports?

Again, there would be no direct change.

The NCAA updated its participation policy in February 2025. Under the current policy, an athlete assigned male at birth may not compete on an NCAA women’s team. The immediate importance is not whether Freedom or White will actually play in the WNBA. That outcome appears highly unlikely without the league first recognizing them as eligible and a team choosing to sign them.

The larger issue is whether sports organizations should define eligibility according to biological sex, gender identity, medical criteria or another standard.

Supporters of sex-based eligibility rules argue that biological differences can affect competitive fairness, safety, scholarships, roster positions and athletic records.

Supporters of transgender inclusion argue that transgender athletes deserve dignity, access to sports and protection from policies they believe unfairly exclude them.

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association has emphasized justice, equity, diversity and inclusion while also stating that transgender people should not be subjected to hate, abuse or political exploitation. Its statement did not provide a final answer regarding WNBA eligibility.

Could the WNBA Decision Influence Younger Athletes Indirectly?

Yes, but primarily through public debate rather than an immediate rule change.

A future WNBA policy could:
