My chest is 36 inches, but my shoulders are somewhere from 18 to 18.5. Because of this, the smallest size I can usually tolerate is a 38R.

I have heard that it's generally possible to take in a jacket by two sizes. But I assume this means that I could reduce the off the rack measurements of a 38R to the off the rack measurements of a 36R, and not push alterations an...

I'll just describe the build because I think a lot of men in their 40s will recognize it. Not overweight overall. Not short and stocky. Weight has settled into the chest and midsection, while the legs, hips, and hands are still fairly slim. Sort of top-heavy but not in a muscular way. The classic "I was fine at 32" shape.
