When tragedy strikes a community, hope often arrives in the simplest of forms: a hot plate of food, a compassionate ear, or a friendly smile. For Steve Carney, delivering that hope has become a deeply rewarding mission – one that has seen him dedicate over 550 volunteer hours to Operation BBQ Relief (OBR) since 2023, earning him OBR’s prestigious Grassroots Award this year.

Yet, Steve’s incredible journey with OBR began with a simple, chance encounter over a decade ago.

Steve’s story with OBR dates back to circa 2013 at the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Amid the bustling atmosphere, Steve noticed a man walking through the park with a backpack and a stack of papers. Curiosity took over, and Steve struck up a conversation.

That man was OBR CEO/Co-Founder Stan Hays.

Stan was spreading the word about a newly formed organization dedicated to feeding communities hit by disasters. In just a few minutes of conversation, Stan conveyed the critical importance of OBR’s mission. Steve was instantly sold on the idea of using the power of barbecue to help people navigate their most difficult days.

For years, Steve stayed involved by donating online and spreading the word. But in 2023, the opportunity to serve on the front lines arrived right in his backyard. After a devastating tornado touched down in Wynne, Arkansas – just an hour from Steve’s home in Memphis, Tennessee – he decided it was time to deploy for the first time. Arriving at the cook site shortly after setup, Steve jumped right in, helping prepare several hundred meals on his first day.

A week (and many thousands of meals later), Steve was completely hooked. What impacted Steve most wasn’t just the sheer volume of meals provided, but the resilient spirit of those around him.

“It is incredible to not only be able to help someone in need, but also to see how many people who have been impacted by a disaster want to help their neighbors,” Steve said. “It is always inspiring to see so many people drop everything to help strangers from across the country or across town.”

For Steve, the heart of OBR lies in human connection. Deployments bring together people from all walks of life, united by a shared purpose. He has watched hesitant, anxious newcomers step onto a site and quickly blossom into confident, essential team members as they experience the warmth of the OBR family.

More importantly, Steve recognizes the profound emotional relief a hot meal and a kind gesture provide when disaster turns someone’s world upside down.

“After a disaster, so many people don’t know what to do or where to turn,” Steve said. “A smile, a warm hug, or an open ear can be the difference between hopelessness and recovery for many people. I love being able to help somebody smile or relax, even for a few minutes.”

Steve’s tireless dedication – clocking over 550 hours of service in just a few short years – is a testament to his passion for helping others. Receiving this year’s Grassroots Award highlights not only his hard work on site, but the incredible heart he brings to every deployment.

To anyone considering volunteering with OBR, Steve’s advice is simple: just show up.

“Whether you can commit to a single shift or a full day, there is a role for everyone, regardless of skill set or experience level,” Steve said.
