Fiji declares public health emergency over rising HIV rates

Fiji is confronting the fastest growing HIV outbreak in the world, a crisis that health authorities have declared a public health emergency. Current data indicates that HIV prevalence among adults in the country has reached 1.6 per cent, meaning approximately one in 60 adults lives with the virus.

Experts note that understanding the situation is not about avoiding travel, but rather encouraging informed behaviour, such as condom use and regular testing for those at risk. These precautions are recommended for travellers regardless of their destination.

Fiji continues to call for additional funding and capacity-building assistance to manage the crisis. The regional response will be critical in supporting health workers and community leaders as they address this urgent challenge.
