Perhaps the conversation between atheists and theists begins with the wrong question. Before we ask whether God exists, we might first ask what each of us treats as ultimate.

Grant to us, O God, we pray, the spirit to always think and do what is right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may be able to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ, who is alive with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Many atheists say they simply believe in one less god than the many that I don't believe in. This badly misunderstands the classical understanding of theism.
