He was born Oct. 25, 1951 at Sioux City, Iowa, a son of Nicholas Menesses and Lola Lee (Holmes) Sanchez. The family worked for a carnival and Nicolas grew up in various communities. They eventually settled in Erie, Kansas, where he graduated from high school in 1970.
