There was a time when becoming a football star meant being seen. Today, it means being seen all the time.

The distinction matters. A generation ago, a young player could announce himself on a Saturday afternoon, make the back pages on Sunday and perhaps disappear from public view until the following weekend. His performances were discussed in pubs, newspapers and television studios, but there was still a boundary between the footballer and the public.

That boundary has largely disappeared.

A teenager who breaks into a first-team squad can now become internationally famous within weeks. One spectacular goal can be watched millions of times before the player has even returned home. A clever piece of skill becomes a viral clip. A badly timed gesture becomes a meme. A photograph from a nightclub can become tomorrow’s controversy. A poor performance can generate thousands of opinions before the player has taken off his boots.

Social media has transformed football stardom into something both extraordinarily powerful and profoundly exhausting.

It has given players an audience their predecessors could scarcely have imagined. Young footballers from countries and leagues that once received little international attention can now build enormous followings. A player no longer needs to wait for a major newspaper, television network or famous club to introduce him to the world. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X can do it overnight.

That is the beautiful side of the revolution.

The other side is that the audience never goes home.Fame without the distance

Modern footballers are unusually accessible celebrities. Supporters can watch training-ground videos, follow their holidays, see family photographs, listen to interviews and react directly to their posts. Clubs encourage it because the players’ personal brands have commercial value. Sponsors want visibility. Supporters want intimacy. Players themselves can turn their accounts into businesses.

But accessibility has a price.

The footballer who opens his life to millions of strangers also opens himself to millions of opinions. And the internet has democratised criticism in a way that football has never previously experienced.

Everybody can now be a pundit.

A supporter watching from Lagos can disagree with a manager in Manchester. A teenager with a phone can dissect a Champions League performance. A former player can offer analysis alongside an anonymous account with 300 followers. Some of the criticism is intelligent and necessary. Much of it is simply emotional. Some of it becomes personal, abusive or threatening.

The problem is not criticism itself. Football has always been criticised. The problem is its volume, speed and permanence.

A player can have an excellent season and still spend an evening reading that he is useless because he missed one chance. He can score twice and become a hero; three days later, one misplaced pass can make him a villain. The emotional temperature changes with astonishing speed.

Research into online abuse of public figures has found that footballers can experience particularly event-driven bursts of abuse, with prominent figures more likely to attract it.

That makes mental strength an increasingly important part of the modern footballer’s equipment.

Talent gets you into the stadium. Increasingly, psychology determines whether you can remain there.

When the football becomes secondary

The story of Jesse Lingard illustrates the point without needing to turn every difficult career into a morality tale.

Lingard was once one of Manchester United’s most recognisable academy graduates, an England international and a player capable of producing decisive moments at the highest level. Yet his struggles became increasingly visible as his form declined.

Later, he described how scrutiny and abuse affected him during a difficult period at United. He said there were moments when he did not want to play because he feared performing badly and facing even more scrutiny.

That is a revealing inversion of football psychology.

The professional is supposed to want the ball. Lingard described reaching a point where he wanted to hide from it.

It would be simplistic to blame social media for his struggles. His difficulties were personal and complex, and no serious account of his career should reduce them to online criticism. But his experience demonstrates how the relentless gaze surrounding modern football can become another weight on a player already carrying enormous expectations.

And that weight can become particularly heavy when supporters believe wealth has somehow removed a player’s right to vulnerability.

“You are a footballer, you live in a nice house, you’ve got money, you can deal with anything,” Lingard recalled people effectively assuming.

It is one of modern football’s strangest contradictions. Players are treated as superhuman when they perform and as overpaid frauds when they fail, while the person underneath the shirt remains remarkably ordinary.The myth of the “mentally weak” player

Football loves simple explanations. A player loses form and suddenly he “lacks mentality”. A promising youngster stops progressing and commentators declare that he cannot handle pressure. A transfer fails and social media produces theories about attitude, discipline and desire

Sometimes those explanations are correct. Often, nobody outside the dressing room knows enough to say.

Dele Alli is perhaps the clearest warning against turning a complicated human story into a football cliché.

Once regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders, Alli’s career declined dramatically after his extraordinary rise at Tottenham. But in 2023 he revealed traumatic experiences from his childhood, including sexual abuse and drug dealing from a young age, as well as struggles with sleeping-pill addiction and rehabilitation.

None of that makes his football career easier to explain. It makes it harder.

The lesson is not that every struggling footballer is secretly battling a hidden trauma. It is that supporters rarely know the complete story.

A player can be twenty-two, enormously wealthy, internationally famous and still be psychologically unprepared for the peculiar violence of modern celebrity.

Fame has never been this profitable — or this invasive

And yet it would be wrong to portray social media as football’s villain.

For many players, it has been liberating.

A footballer can communicate directly with supporters without waiting for a journalist to interpret his words. Players can challenge stereotypes, support charitable causes, promote businesses and speak about issues that matter to them. They can build audiences that remain valuable even after their playing careers end.

The modern footballer is not merely an athlete. He is often a media company, advertising platform and global celebrity rolled into one.

That is especially important for players from less prominent footballing nations. Social media can collapse geographical barriers. A brilliant young Nigerian, Ghanaian, Moroccan or Brazilian player can attract international attention almost instantly. The world can discover talent that traditional scouting and broadcasting systems might once have overlooked.

The same technology that exposes players to abuse can therefore create opportunities that previous generations never had.

That is the double edge.

The knife cuts both ways.

The new skill nobody puts on the team sheet

Perhaps football’s next great competitive advantage will not be speed, strength or technique but emotional intelligence.

The modern player needs to know when to speak and when to remain silent. When to read criticism and when to ignore it. When to use social media and when to put the phone down. When a viral moment is an opportunity and when it is a trap.

Clubs increasingly understand this. Elite football is no longer only about conditioning the body. Mental-health support, player education and psychological preparation have become increasingly important parts of professional environments.

But responsibility cannot belong to clubs alone.
