Insta360 has announced the X6, its new flagship 360 camera, and there’s quite a lot more going on here than a simple resolution bump. The headline is native 8K 360 video at 50fps, but what catches my attention most is the combination of larger sensors, substantially more processing power and a stronger push towards getting usable footage out of the camera with less editing.

At the heart of the Insta360 X6 are two custom Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors. Insta360 says these provide full 1-inch-equivalent 360 imaging, with 33% more sensor area than the X5 and around four times the light intake per frame. That should be particularly significant in low light, where small-sensor 360 cameras have traditionally had to work hard to control noise and retain detail.

We’ve seen what increasing sensor size can do for this format before in our Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition review, so the X6’s imaging hardware is one of the areas I’ll be particularly interested to test.

Behind those sensors is a triple-chip system consisting of an 8-core 3.3GHz 4nm processor and two dedicated imaging chips. Insta360 claims this provides 500% more computing power than the X5 while drawing 35% less power. AdaptiveTone 2.0 can meter the two lenses separately and capture two exposures per frame to extend dynamic range, while two ambient light sensors are used to help reduce flicker in low-light scenes.

The X6 is also the first 360 camera to offer native in-camera Dolby Vision, according to Insta360. It records 10-bit colour with more than 1.07 billion colours and also offers I-Log for anyone who would rather grade footage themselves.

Resolution has moved on considerably since the days of the 5.7K Insta360 ONE X we reviewed. The X6 records full 360 footage at up to 8K50fps, allowing you to shoot everything around the camera and decide on your framing afterwards.

However, Insta360 is increasingly trying to remove that editing stage altogether. InstaFrame 2.0 can track people, pets and objects and output conventional flat 4K footage directly from the camera. Combined with the Foldable Selfie Stick Remote Kit, the camera can also be controlled more like a subject-tracking gimbal. A separate POV Head Tracker can make the framing follow the direction you’re looking.

There’s also a single-lens mode, turning the X6 into a more conventional action camera. It can record up to 5K60fps, offer a 170-degree field of view at 5K30fps and shoot 4K at 120fps for slow motion. The hardware has been beefed up elsewhere. There’s a 2.32-inch OLED display with a claimed 1200-nit peak brightness, while the new 2600mAh Xtreme Battery is rated for 140 minutes of 8K30fps recording. Insta360 says charging from empty to 80% takes 24 minutes, and the battery can operate at temperatures down to -20°C.

Replaceable Lens 2.0 is claimed to be five times more scratch-resistant than the previous design, while the camera itself is IP68 rated and waterproof to 20m without a housing. Add the Invisible Dive Case Pro and that increases to 60m.

I also like the decision to include 64GB of internal storage, of which 47GB is available to the user. It means forgetting a memory card doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a shoot. Wi-Fi 6 offers claimed wireless transfer speeds up to 100MB/s, while USB 3.0 increases wired transfers to a claimed 450MB/s.

The other major part of the X6 story is software. Insta360 PanoMind is the company’s new 360-focused AI model, which it says has been trained using more than 10,000 hours of footage. Its AI Director can analyse footage directly on the camera while it is charging and create highlight edits ready for transfer to the Insta360 app. Processing takes place on the camera rather than in the cloud, and the feature can be switched off.

Auto Edit 2.0 provides another route to automated framing, cuts, music and transitions, while cloud users get Moments Pro, an editing tool built with Google Gemini that can generate videos around a chosen subject, mood, style and timeframe.

The combination makes the Insta360 X6 much more than an 8K specification update. On paper, it’s an attempt to bring 360 capture, subject tracking, action-camera shooting and automated editing into one compact system. The big question now is how much of that larger-sensor promise translates into cleaner real-world footage, particularly once you start reframing an 8K spherical file into a conventional video.

The official UK price is not currently available in the supplied official information, US price is US$669.99 for the Standard Bundle and Euro price is not currently available. The Essentials Bundle has an official US price of US$799.99. The Insta360 X6 will be available from 12 August 2026.
