Ahead of the Cowboys first preseason game, reports are starting to surface about some of the defensive starters getting some playing time over the course of the Cowboys three preseason games. With Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence headlining those conversations, Cowboys fans should expect to see both play in some capacity over the next three weeks.

And Jerry Jones discusses the big trade from last offseason and how it has resulted in the Cowboys we see today, especially on defense.

Jones called Parsons a “great player,” noting his ability enabled the Cowboys to make such a dramatic deal with Green Bay.

“Otherwise, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make that kind of trade. That’s why it worked,” Jones said. “But the fact that we revamped our defense, that was an instigator toward that attitude: ‘Let’s come in here and change this up, let’s get rush from the interior, let’s be stronger on the run in the interior with an emphasis on those guys in the middle.’ That’s not an accident. That that’s what you see out there from the inside.”

A big question heading into the Cowboys first preseason game was if Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence would get any snaps in the preseason game action. Tommy Yarrish reports both could get “a little bit” of run over the next three weeks.

Both Downs and Lawrence have been impressive during the first few weeks of training camp, so it would be nice to see how the rookies perform in their first taste of NFL action. But because the players are expected to be contributors this season, we may only get a glimpse.

According to Cowboys insider Tommy Yarrish, Schottenheimer expects the first-round picks to “play a little bit.” As for who else will get a look during the preseason as the team works its way down to a 53-man roster, that plan is still being developed.

The Cowboys defense is getting a lot of the focus in this year’s training camp. But don’t forget about this position battle going on, on the offensive side of the ball.

We’re closing in on three weeks of training camp and the truth is we haven’t found much about the bottom-half of the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver room.

Sure, we know about the top-end. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are cooking. Ryan Flournoy is solidified himself as WR3 and KaVontae Turpin is once again a part of the offense, albeit in a limited role.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones mentioned one name when asked if any players had surprised him at training camp: Tyler Guyton.

The Cowboys left tackle started training camp in a battle with Nate Thomas for the starting job. But Guyton has emerged as the starter 10 practices into training camp.

“I really like Guyton,” Jones said after Thursday’s practice. “Guyton is really, I think being where at the level of competition that we had hoped for with him. That’s a plus. That’s a plus.”
