NEAR WEST SIDE — Nine boys lined up inside a gym Tuesday afternoon as they prepared to race. They laughed and jokingly held each other back before they were given the signal to start.

Race organizers, volunteers and parents all watched eagerly as the boys burst across the starting line. The boys, aged 14-18, had trained for weeks to compete in the 3K race.
